Hi Vanessa (and Hayley who's been giving me wonderful support on Udemy and the rest of the team) and everyone else who would like to sign up, which means we could be potential partners in crime observing our fellow human beings and their funniest and weirdest behaviours!
A little background about myself
My name's Shane and I've just left my job as copywriter for the largest wellness chain (yoga/gym/healthy food/yoga wear) in Asia. I felt guided to start my own business and Vanessa's courses have been a tremendous help (I have purchased all of Vanessa's courses on both Udemy and CreativeLive and subsequently got 3 of my friends to sign up so we've formed a study group). I'm starting a branding/marketing business so I can support entrepreneurs in the yoga/fitness/spiritual/holistic community because that's what I'm truly passionate about.
History of learning
For as long as I've been conscious, I've been fascinated by people. I've taken certified courses in MBTI, Enneagram, DiSC, personality dimensions and I've studied numerology, astrology and face reading to better understand people! In fact, it was during a workshop on face reading (the face reader was German and has studied face reading with masters in South Africa, Greece, Columbia and China!) that I became really interested in body language. We talked about micro-expressions but Vanessa's delivery and scientific approach just took the learning to the next level!
Personal success with body language
I've been interviewing for jobs (after all, my business is in its initial stage) and I used techniques I learnt in Vanessa's courses with tremendous success! I always managed to find a way to sit across diagonally from the interviewer instead of being opposite him/her and I made use of my hand gestures to increase trust and credibility. Before I went into the interview room, I used my power poses to increase my confidence and I was paying attention to their facial micro expressions to see whether they were interested in the topics I was talking about! I've built rapport with the interviewers and have moved forward to the next stage of the hiring process seeing people more high up in the corporation and I'm just confident I will succeed!
Why I want to become a trainer
I'm interested in people and I genuinely want to help people. I'm an INFP. Also an introvert like Vanessa but because of this I'm very sensitive to how people feel and have great compassion. I don't want people to go through the same mistakes that I have and I want to help people to succeed, and in doing so become successful myself. I am particularly intrigued by using body language skills to help people like yoga teachers or spiritual practitioners to open up and be more active in getting clients. A lot of truly spiritual people believe in giving, so much so that they find it hard to ask for money. I want to support them and help them realise their great work needs to be supported so they can help more people! I also hope to help them spot who could be a difficult client or student so they can be better prepared. A lot of spiritual practitioners like meditation teachers or energy healers don't believe in themselves enough even though they're great people! Through body language training, they can build their confidence in themselves and in speaking and presenting in front of an audience.
How I can contribute to the trainer community
The main reason why Vanessa's approach clicks with me is I believe in science and I just love that Vanessa's teaching is solidly grounded in scientific research. I have a master's in nutrition so when I give nutrition advice I give people data from scientific research. Apart from becoming a trainer, I would love to contribute to the research that Vanessa and her team are currently working on! I love reading research findings and presenting them in a way that is accessible to the layman - that was part of what I did as a copywriter!
My speciality is branding/social media marketing. I can help fellow trainers develop their unique brand and provide advice on how to meaningfully engage their potential clients on social media channels. My niche would be body language for spiritual practitioners:-)
I really hope to do this programme so I can help more people and become more successful myself, but whether or not I get selected in the end, I'm immensely grateful for all the knowledge I have gained from taking Vanessa's courses (I haven't finished them all. I'm still watching and practising!).
Thank you so much Vanessa and the whole team at Science of People!
