I just watched this video. It is fascinating indeed! I used to work in an acute mental health unit and we had a particular client who was constantly drug seeking. As a team we decided to try out the placebo effect and instead of giving the meds for anxiety (which she was addicted too), we gave her a placebo tablet stating it was a more effective drug. It calmed her down in less time than the actual drug and lasted longer too!
The opposite is true - my husband would not let his mother read the pamphlet that came with her medicine, because whenever she read the side-effects, she ended up with nearly each one of them. He ended up reading the pamphlet and said there were only a couple of side-effects, but nothing serious. Whenever he did this, she was fine.
